Virus in spring

How to enjoy Vir in the spring?

Spring is ideal for those who long for pleasant temperatures and want to enjoy a calmer atmosphere. The island comes to life, smells of the sea, lavender and budding flowers, and the air already invites you to take walks and bike trips.

In the spring, local festivities take place here, such as asparagus festivals, Easter celebrations, or craft markets with local specialties, which are a great opportunity to experience the true Dalmatian atmosphere. And after a day full of experiences? Well-deserved relaxation in the jacuzzi on the terrace at sunset – this is spring Vir in its calmest form.

International Women's Day

International Women's Day, celebrated on March 8th, celebrates the equality and strength of women around the world, and on the island of Vir, it is traditionally held at the Kotarina restaurant. Ladies here enjoy free coffee and desserts, and representatives of the Municipality of Vir also present them with roses. The two-hour meeting on the Kotarina terrace is always filled with music and a friendly atmosphere.

Asparagus harvesting

Spring in the Zadar region is synonymous with asparagus harvesting, which grows wild here in the coastal pine forests and on rocky slopes. Locals have been collecting it for generations – often from early morning, when the air is still cool and the sea breeze smells of salt. Wild Dalmatian asparagus is thinner, more aromatic, and distinctly bittersweet, which is why it is considered one of the most prized spring ingredients in the entire Mediterranean.

Cycling Race Zadar – Vir

The traditional Zadar – Vir cycling race, 26 kilometers long, is a relaxed ride with several stops and takes place three times a year, with the first spring stage taking place in April. The route is always the same – it starts on the Branimir coast in Zadar, continues through Diklo and along the cycle path to St. George's Square on the island of Vir. After refreshments, there is a musical program and an awards ceremony, where participants can win valuable cycling equipment.

Day of Daffodils

This charity event is traditionally held on Vir at the end of March. Through the symbolic sale of daffodil flowers, which are a symbol of new life and hope, funds are raised for the prevention and early diagnosis of breast cancer. In addition to donations from citizens, the Municipality of Vir regularly contributes to the Oncology Department of the General Hospital in Zadar for the purchase of equipment for the irradiation of cancer patients.
