Vir in winter

How to Enjoy Vir in Winter?

Winter transforms the island into an oasis of peace and quiet – except for the magical period of Advent, Christmas holidays, and New Year’s celebrations, which Croatians celebrate in full splendor, and everyone should experience it here at least once in their lifetime! The days are shorter, the temperatures are lower, but winter in Vir still has its unique charm.

Walks along the empty coast, fresh salty air, warm Croatian specialties in local taverns, and the murmur of the sea make Vir an ideal environment for those who want to write, create, read, or simply relax. Sunny days are more frequent than you would expect, and the tranquility of the island literally gets under your skin. Enjoy Advent, the feast of Saint Lucia, Saint Nicholas with devils, celebrate Christmas and New Year’s Eve and the arrival of the new year.

Saint Lucy

The celebration of Saint Lucy's Day, the patron saint of sight and light, is a beloved Advent tradition in Croatia that reminds us of the importance of seeing "light in the darkness," promotes faith, hope, and community, and includes prayers for protection and healing of eyesight. Typical for this holiday are festive processions combined with an animation program, during which Saint Lucy comes to the streets to delight children and adults alike.

Christmas Markets and Shopping

If you're looking for unusual and original Christmas gifts, you can get them this year in Vir or Zadar. You can visit smaller boutique and design shops, as well as larger shopping centers that offer plenty of inspiration and quality products, often at significantly lower prices than in the Czech Republic or Slovakia. And what's more, the whole Christmas rush is much calmer here!

Saint Nicholas

Saint Nicholas is the patron saint of sailors, fishermen, and travelers in Croatia, and although his feast day is celebrated similarly to in our country, combined with the sound of the murmuring sea in the distance, the celebration is a truly special experience. On Friday, December 6th, Saint Nicholas will personally arrive in Zadar, where you can meet him in a procession between the Roman Forum and Trga pet bunara Square.

Mulled Wine with a Hint of the Sea

Even in Croatia, you won't miss out on the scent of cinnamon and mulled wine, made, of course, from local Dalmatian vineyards, with the addition of roasted chestnuts and a drop of brandy. But you can experiment and treat yourself to cherry liqueur from the orchards around Vir, rakija (we recommend fig), herbal brandy travarica, or prošek, a traditional sweet dessert wine.

Workshops for kids

Throughout Advent, Croatians prepare workshops and ateliers for children of all ages, where children can have fun and take home a handmade souvenir.

Visnjik

The Višnjik sports complex in nearby Zadar becomes the center of winter fun for children and adults every year. Don't miss ice skating on the large ice rink, various attractions with a rich animation program, and Christmas stalls with traditional festive refreshments.

New Year's celebrations

If you're looking for the ideal place to celebrate New Year's Eve with your whole family or a group of friends, come and enjoy the end of the year with us and celebrate the beginning of the new one by the sea!
